ASSILIOS KOZOBOLIS
PROFESSOR OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Vassilios P. Kozobolis was born in Athens, Greece. He was graduated from the Medical School, University of Messina, Italy. Doctor Medicinae (Dr. Med., excellent with honors).

He acquired his specialty in Ophthalmology at the Hippokrateion Hospital of Athens.

He realized his PhD on Exfoliation Syndrome and Exfoliation Glaucoma in the University of Crete, Medical School (excellent with honors).

Clinical experience and previous employment:
He was consultant of Ophthalmology in the National Health Security Service in Athens, Assistant Professor of the Institute of Technology and Education of Athens, Department of Optics and Refraction, major Registrar in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, and head of the Glaucoma unit and of the Mobile Ophthalmological Unit (epidemiological research). During this period he was also a member of the research team of the Vardinoyannion Eye Institute of the University of Crete (VEIC) and he was focused on glaucoma and refractive surgery and epidemiological research in ophthalmology.

He specializes in various surgical techniques in anterior segment (Cataract, Glaucoma: trab, non-penetrating filtering surgery, Micro Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, Refractive Surgery, Corneal Transplantation, Corneal Crosslinking).

In 2002 he was elected Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the Democritus University of Thrace, Medical School in Alexandroupolis, Greece and head in the Department of Ophthalmology in the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis.

In 2004 he founded the Eye Institute of Thrace (E.I.T.) in the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis focused on Glaucoma, Refractive Surgery and basic sciences.

In 2005 he patented (European Patent Office) a new device in Ophthalmology, the intraocular (endophakic) tonometer.

In 2007 he founded the Eye Bank and Corneal Transplantation Center in the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis.

On November 2007 he was elected full Professor in the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis.

Head of the MSc entitled “Imaging in Ophthalmology”, Democritus University of Thrace.

He is Author and co-author of various articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and reviewer in several journals in Europe and USA. Fluent
in Greek, Italian, English (PubMed, Scopus: search as Kozobolis or kozombolis).
